Hyderabad’s Garbage Collectors Demand Social Security and Dignity
WorkFREE, Montfort Social Institute (MSI) and India Network for Basic Income (INBI) have jointly organised a city convention with about five hundred garbage collectors of Hyderabad on November 5th, 2023 to demand fair working conditions, dignity and social security. Most of the attendees are also part of the WorkFREE Pilot and have been recipients of UBI for 18 months. The programme was organised under the banner of Hyderabad Garbage Collectors' Collective (HyGCC) which was formed as an extension to the pilot study. The executive body of HyGCC formed at the Convention plans to organise a 2 year campaign regarding the lives and working conditions of the garbage collectors who keep the city clean and play an important role in the protection of public health and conservation of the environment.
News from the Office of the Pilot Plan to Implement Universal Basic Income in Catalonia
On November 24th and 25th the Spanish Basic Income Network (RRB), a node of the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN), celebrated its XXI Annual Symposium at the Universitat de Lleida (UdL), Catalonia. You can find the program here.
The symposium featured two lectures by David Calnitsky (Western University, Ontario) and Louise Haagh (York University, BIEN), as well as sessions by RRB members, social movements, professionals working on UBI from different perspectives, and several members of the Office of the Pilot Plan to Implement the Universal Basic Income, and its Advisor Board and its International Scientific Committee.
Albeit the Catalan Pilot Project has been defunded, and therefore frozen, due to political pressures from the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC-PSOE), the the Office of the Pilot Plan to Implement the Universal Basic Income continues to work on improving the pilot's design and on campaigns to inform the citizens of Catalonia about the project.
The Office of the Pilot Plan to Implement the Universal Basic Income has organized presentations of the project in several Catalan cities like Tortosa, Lleida and Montblanc, and it has been also invited to present the project in Paris in February.
